I believe clay tablets with what is called "cuneiform" symbols have been found in ancient Sumeria (what is now the Iraq and Iran area) that are 5 or 6 thousand years old. There may also be other archeological findings from other parts of the world, but Sumerian cuneiform is well known. Clay was used because they didn't have a Staples nearby to go get paper at. Plus, when wet, it was easy to scratch symbols onto, and then when it dried, it was more permanent.

Yes. The main one was cuneiform, invented by the Sumerians. It spread throughout the Middle East until writing on papyrus completely replaced it in the first century AD. It was in use for more than 3000 years.
