I believe clay tablets with what is called "cuneiform" symbols have been found in ancient Sumeria (what is now the Iraq and Iran area) that are 5 or 6 thousand years old. There may also be other archeological findings from other parts of the world, but Sumerian cuneiform is well known. Clay was used because they didn't have a Staples nearby to go get paper at. Plus, when wet, it was easy to scratch symbols onto, and then when it dried, it was more permanent.

Well, it is not able to be spelled on the computer because they wrote in cuneiform (q ney e form). Each letter was a series of wedges and lines. They wrote with a stylus (wedge-shaped) on a clay tablet. Look up cuneifrom to find out how to write it. It takes a long time doing it on paper with a pen, but it is even longer on the the clay tablet with a stylus. I did it in history. It took forever.
