Betta fish originated in Thailand, and spread all over Asia. Today's Betta's are far more elaborate than their ancestors, who were dull in color. Those ancient bettas lived in puddles, rice paddies, and slow-moving streams.
Beta fish come from Thailand and Cambodia, but they live all over Asia. Beta fish live in small ponds, rivers, and even drains.

Bettas evolved in the pools and puddles of the tropical jungles of Asia and can sometimes be found in the rice paddies of Malaysia and Indonesia. The ones you see in pet shops are born in captivity and can be from almost anywhere. They could be locally bred or imported from Asia.
