Jehovah's Witnesses believe what The Bible says about the condition of the dead, and what hope there is for those who have died.

First, what is the condition of the dead? The Bible says at Ecclesiastes 9:5,10 (KJ Version) "For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest."

The Bible says that those who have died, are not conscious of anything. They can't speak, feel, see, or do anything. They are dead. The Hebrew word that is translated "grave" in verse 10 that I quoted was "Sheol." This same word appeared 65 times in the original Hebrew language. The King James translators redered this word 31 times as "grave," 31 times as "hell," and 3 times as "pit." Knowing this it helps us to see that Sheol, hell and the grave are the same thing. So those who have died, have entered hell, which is simply the common grave. It is a place of inactivity, with no knowledge or consciousness. One instance where they translated the Hebrew word Sheol into the English word hell was at Psalms 16:10, where it speaks prophetically that Jesus would be in "hell" or Sheol, after he was put to death.

Later in the Greek portion of the Bible at Acts 2:27, the actual fullfillment of the prophecy of Psalms 16:10 is found, where it says that Jesus was in "hell", but not forgotten, that is, he was not there permanently. The Greek word redered "hell" by the King James translators was "hades." In all 10 places that hades appears, they translated it into the English word "hell." So sheol, hades, hell, grave, and pit all mean the same thing. A place of inactivity, unconsciousness, no feeling, no thought, no work, nothing.

That is why when Job was suffering, he prayed to go there. (Job 14:13- 'sheol redered as grave in the KJ) Job simply wanted to die to end his suffering, until such a time that God would resurrect him, or bring him back from sheol, the grave, or back to life.

When Jacob thought that his son Joseph was dead, he wanted to go down to sheol to where he thought his son was. (Genesis 37:35-'grave:KJ, sheol in the Hebrew texts') Did Jacob think that his son Joseph was in a firey torment in sheol? No, he thought his son was simply in the grave, and he wanted to die as well because of his grief for his son.

Jehovah's Witnesses view the scriptures as indicating that death is simply an unconscious state. Jesus compared it to sleep. (Mark 5:39) Jehovah's Witnesses recognize that the Bible indicates that after a person dies, all future life prospects now exist in the resurrection hope, made possible by the redeeming value of the sacrifice that Jesus gave. Jesus blood was poured out as a sacrifice to God, which serves as a legal basis upon which all those who excercise faith in him can have "everlasting life."(John 3:16) Jesus' resurrection was a guarantee that this is a real hope. Jehovah's Witnesses believe that we are all born under the condemnation of sin and death.(Romans 5:12)

Ezekiel 18:4 indicates that the soul that is sinning dies. That is why we all grow old, get sick, and die. But, there is a resurrection hope. (John 5:28,29) In the resurrection, people who have dies can live again under the arrangement of God's Kingdom. This is the kingdom that Jesus taught us to pray for at Matthew 6:9,10.

Jehovah's Witnesses believe death is a state of non-existence. They believe dead people are completely unconsciouse of anything. They do not believe humans have an immortal soul that escapes the body at death.

More information about the Jehovah's Witness view on death can be found at their website (see related links below).

Ecclesiastes 9:5,10 says that the dead are "conscious of nothing at all." Those same verses indicate that the dead are in "Sheol," which the Bible describes as the common grave. Jehovah's Witnesses believe that when a person dies, assuming they are not one of the remnant of the 144,000, they go into a state of non existence, that Jesus compared to a sleep like condition. (John 11:11) The Bible says that there is hope for those who are sleeping in death as 1 Thessalonians 4:13 indicates. That hope, that Jehovah's Witnesses believe very strongly in, is the resurrection. (Acts 24:15) The word resurrection literally means to raise up, or revive. It is the hope that Jesus taught us about at John 5:28,29, where he speaks of those in the memorial tombs as 'coming out,' at the command of God.

The overwhelming vast majority of those who are resurrected will live here on earth under paradisaic conditions. These are part of a group of "meek [that] shall inherit the earth." (Psalms 37:29; Matthew 5:5) We believe that the majority of those now dead are in the memorial tombs awaiting this promised resurrection, when God's Kingdom, with Jesus as it's king, 'puts an end to all the kingdoms of mankind that are now in existence (Daniel 2:44) and ushers in His promised Kingdom. This is the Kingdom that Jesus taught us to pray for. (Matthew 6:9,10)

We believe that a relatively small number, 144,000, are resurrected to heavenly life to rule as kings and priests over the earth. (Revelation 5:10; Revelation 7:4; Revelation 14:1-3; Revelation 20:6) We believe that most of the 144,000 are already in heaven, some of which receiving their heavenly reward the moment they died. (1 Corinthians 15:52)

We believe that the time of the end for this world's system of things with all it's man-made governments is here (Matthew 24:3-14; 2 Timothy 3:1-5), which means that soon the fullfillment of all the prophecies regarding the resurrection of those who will live on the earth in paradise will soon take place.

Additional Answer: As one of Jehovah's Witnesses I can state that we believe the dead are conscious of nothing at all, they are in a sleep like state and they will remain that way until we are relieved of this system of things and a new paradise earth will reside here forever. There are a few that will go to heaven but this is Jehovah's choice, he is the only one who can judge as to who will go on to heaven and who will continue living on the earth.

Additional Answer: Jehovah's Witnesses believe that one of two things happen to a person when they die.

1) They remain 'asleep' in death as described above, awaiting a resurrection to a Paradise earth.

Or

2) They are instantly transformed into a spirit creature to reign in heaven with Jesus for ever.

The former is the condition for the vast majority of humans. The latter is for those of the 'remnant' of the 144,000 still alive today of which at the 2010 annual report there were 11,202.

As reported in the Watchtower 15th May 2011, Jack Barr has recently received that gift of immortality. Jack Barr was one of the Governing Body and finished his earthly course (passed away or died) on Dec 4th 2010.

We believe that the dead are not conscious of anything, when they're dead they no longer think. (See Ecclesiastes 9:5) But a small group of 144,000 humans are in the process of being resurrected to heaven. And in the near future true servants of Jehovah God will be resurrected to life on a restored paradise Earth. (See Revelation 7:4/9 and Isaiah 35:5-6) For more information you can go to www.watchtower.org.

What happens to you if your not a Jehovah's Witness?

Could the question be more specific as otherwise the answer could be 'all that life delivers' or similar. It is fair to say, though, that one of the most important things is that you will die at the forthcoming Armageddon, unless you die or become a Jehovah's Witness first.

Can a Jehovah's witness have a cross on headstone when they die?

NO! No cross; definitely not. But the headstone doesn't need to be empty. Perhaps an engraved rose; or maybe a Bible. Maybe the date of birth and death. Perhaps 'Survived by' information. Personally I think most of us get creamated, but not sure on that.

You are a Jehovah witness religious group.Your son is sick and needed blood transfusion to stay alive.Do you allow blood transfusion or reject it knowing that your son will die without getting blood?

Answer; I'll let my son die, cause of my belief to Jehovah witness..But...you got lot of question to answer to investigation. Brain dictates your decision not your feelings. in someday, you will realize, did I made a good decision to sacrifice my son, cause I am a Jehovah witness? people desrved to live not to die, without transfusion of blood to son you compare yourself in abortion. whatever..... EDIT: i will reject the blood transfusion and let him take an alternative to the blood transfusion. i would love my child and want him to live, thus i will make sure to request an alternative. however i will not go against God's law on blood. if he dies i am assured that he will have a chance to live again on Paradise Earth.

Did Selena die because she was a Jehovah's Witness and would not take any blood following the shooting?

People don't die because they are Jehovah's Witnesses; People don't die because they don't take blood. People die because they are 'shot to death'. The question is like asking: Did she die because the Theatre didn't have security guards armed with guns to shoot the shooter first so he wouldn't shoot others? That's a crazy question to ask. By its framing, the question subtly implies it was the Theatre's fault. Jehovah's Witnesses want the BEST medical care they can get. Blood transfusions are NOT the BEST in medical care. So we choose OTHER methods that avoid the use of Blood. Sometimes giving blood DOESN'T help, people die anyway; sometimes other methods don't help either, people die anyway. People die for other reasons than being a Jehovah's Witness who refuses blood. No one can pin it on that one factor. Regarding the person in question - - I am not familiar with the person, to respond any other way than above.

Did Selena die because she did not have a blood transfusion?

She was a Jehovah's witness and she did not believe in medical treatment Gracias! (Thank you)

Did Selena die from losing a lot of blood?

No, the singer Selena did not refuse blood. She was pronounced dead on her arrival at the hospital. She was a Jehovah Witness and they do not believe in blood transfusions.
