Odocoileus, North American deer, appeared about two million years ago in California, shorty after modern horses appeared there. Although they are now ubiquitous, Odocoileus were fairly rare until their populations exploded after megafaunal extinctions (Kurten and Anderson 1980). (Geist, 265).

Like are creatures nature ocassionnly creates a color variation like black squirrels and white deer. Once that genetic pool is established you get more colored offspring. We own a game farm and have several white deer. The first white buck we had we bred to a normal brown whitail doe and had 2 white fawns. Now these fawns have brown and white genes. We could breed white to white and have brown or white.
