By default in windows XP when a user deletes files they go into the recycle bin where they reside until they are bumped out by other files the user deletes later. At which point they are actually deleted.
However when a file is deleted, the data still resides on the hard disk. Basically all the file system does is remove the file from its table of contents which leaves that dataspace open for use in the future whenever new files are written. The actual data will remain until that same space is allocated to another file & thus over-written. This is done for the sake of performance, as otherwise when you deleted a large file, it would take just as long to delete it as it did to write it. As it is, file deletion is near instantaneous.
There are utilities availble which can go through and recover and/or remove this hidden data. Recovering files in this manner is very hit or miss, many times the files will be corrupted or incomplete as most OS's are near constantly reading and writing to the hard drive, it is very likely -some- of the data will have been over-written.

∙ 13y agoFiles that have been deleted are simply marked to be overwritten when a program needs more space or has to be installed. The Files are never permanently deleted usually. A file can be stored in many different parts of the hard drive and can become partialy overwritten by other files, this is called Fragmentation. You can Google how to recover deleted files" and you can find many programs that will recover any and all files and display where they have been sent to after recovery so you can either save them or Shred them with a permanent Deletion program.

∙ 12y agoThe files actually don't "go" anywhere. When you delete a file, basically, the first letter is removed from the file name. This prevents the "File Allocation Table" (FAT) from being able to locate it, effectively making in inaccessable or "deleted".

When you deleted the files, you must have deleted the uninstaller.

They stay on the computer, but the space they used is marked as being free to be used by other files. So as you create new files and save other files, they will start to use the space where the deleted files are, and eventually they will be completely overwritten. Because they are still there, this is why it is still possible to get some deleted files back if you try to do so soon after they are deleted. The more time you leave the more likely it is that the space they are in will be used by other files, making it impossible to get them back.
