As sad as it is, dogs do know that they are dying and they understand it perfectly. I had a Cocker Spaniel that I loved very much that died. He stopped eating and drinking and so we brought him in the house and put him in a crate with a water bottle and a food bowl to see if he would eat. We all left the room so he wouldn't feel nervous. I heard painful howls and went in the kitchen to see what was wrong. On the floor I saw my dog breathing weird and looking up at me. He knew he was about to die and he crawled out of the cage to come say goodbye to me. I hugged him one more time and then I felt his body go limp. So, yes, dogs do understand when they are dying.

Most animals will retreat to a quiet, covered, darkened, "safe" place when they feel very ill. It seems like this is is in "anticipation" of death, but it is actually their desire to hide away from pain, confusion, danger, and other animals. Animals, when they die don't "know" that they are dying; if they are euthanized they will continue to lick your hand or purr when stroked until the euthanizing solution takes over and they become unconscious, then stop breathing. When animals are in great pain, due to injury of illness, their systems shut down quickly and they generally fall into a somnolent state. They become moribund, and then their breathing just stops and they depart this life.

Dogs go away to die so that they don't cause a lot of pain and sorrow for the owners. Also it is a thing that they have probably done in the past generations.
We are all going to die.. If you're more specific maybe we could tell you when.

It depends on the dog's personality. More often than not, dogs will take themselves away to die. If it is possible, however, they will hide themselves and die as near as possible to their owners.

In general, most animals will want to be alone or "go hide" when dying, yes. However, the fact your dog is hiding doesn't necessarily mean that. If you want to be certain or think something is wrong, perhaps go see your veterinarian to make sure.

they might run if they are in pain, sounds awkward, but actually true! But most dogs just sit somewhere peaceful And close their eyes. The only movements they will probably make is blinking and twitching. Hope this helps! And if your dog died, I'm so sorry...
