The earliest gecko species found dated back to 55 - 43 million years ago during the Paleogene period, while the Himalayas were being formed. It was found on the Island of Madagascar, which had detached from Pangea from about 65 million years ago and now resides in the Australian fossil and mineral museum.

These animals have been around for hundred's of thousands of years. They came from every continent except the cold south of Antarctica and still do to this present time.

The earliest known reference for the word gecko comes from the year 1774, from the Malaysian word 'gekoq', said to be imitative of its cry. Earlier forms were chacco (1711), and jackoa (1727).

A gecko lives in the warm regions on our Earth.

There are so many species of geckos in the world. Some examples are - crested, leopard, golden, and tokay. The most common geckos sold in commercial stores are the leopard, crested, and house. Leopard geckos are found in the deserts of Pakistan, western India, Afghanistan, and Iran. Crested geckos are found in New Caledonia, which is a tropical island by Australia. The house gecko can be found in southeastern Asia and in northern parts of Africa. Some geckos are tropical and some are desert species - it just depends on what kind they are. Those are the main types of geckos.

Most species of gecko will burrow into substrate and lay their eggs 4-6 inches in the soil. There are some species of gecko that leave a mucus / sticky substance, similar to glue and glue their eggs to a surface such as shrubs, bark and leaves.

Most gecko species seek out a dark, damp area to lay their eggs. Females will deposit two hard shelled eggs anywhere from 3-6" deep in moist soil. These eggs can then take anywhere from 30-90+ days to incubate and hatch. There are few gecko species that are an exception. Some species such as the tokay gecko will "glue" two hard shelled eggs to a solid surface such as the inside of corkbark, on the underside of fallen tree's etc.. The female tokay gecko will guard her eggs until they have fully incubated. Other species such as the rough snouted gecko of the Rhacodactylus species have live babies.

How often should you play with your Leopard Gecko?

Your gecko will let you know when he or she wants to come out and play! I have three leopard gecko's and if they are feeling sociable, when I put my hand into their vivarium to offer food, change their water or clean their toilet corner they will wander over and climb onto my hand and up my arm! A gecko who does not want to come out of their vivarium will walk away or go into their hide, if they do this it is best to leave them alone. But if they show interest in a hand laid flat palm up in front of them or step onto it then they are ready to come out for a visit! Be patient and do not handle them when they are not interested or run away, and you will be rewarded with a gecko who becomes very tame and happy to be handled.

What can a flying gecko live with?

Species of gecko that come from the same region, habitat and ecosystem are able to co exist with factors such as: space, temperament's, personality, feeding schedules, light cycles, heat, humidity, hideouts, breeding season. For example: Tokay geckos and Golden geckos both come from Southeast Asia. The tokay gecko is a very territorial, aggressive species and if housed with a Golden gecko (even though they require the exact same housing conditions) There is a sure chance that the golden gecko will have wounds from the tokay.Housing multiple species is not recommended for a avid hobbyist.
