Groundhogs live in open fields, open woods, valleys and plains.
Groundhogs usually live in the open country side, ie. farm fields is best to view. They will invade small town and city residential areas, that border the edge of open country. They can be a real nuisance if you happen to have a vegetable garden, as prefer garden greens over grass, kind of like desert to them. They burrow holes in the ground with two entrances. Situating throughout North America. Where else they habit, im not sure.
Most groundhogs live in rocky and mountainous areas. There are also those that are low land creatures. Being one of the few species that hibernate, groundhogs usually build burrows in wooded or brushy areas that is dug below the frost line for them to remain at a stable temperature well above freezing during the winter months.
There are no groundhogs in Ireland.
