Rivers usually start in mountain regions, and flow to the sea. Rivers begin from snow, ice, or glaciers melting from mountains, or from springs rising from the ground, or from the overflow of lakes, or where precipitation is high enough to allow water runoff to form a river and sustain it. Many start in mountainous areas as there is greater rainfall (air rises above mountains, cools, condenses, rains).

Many rivers have their source in areas that are rocky. Often there will be a layer of impermeable rock below the surface and this will force the water to collect within the permeable rock and ground until the ground can hold no more, then it springs a leak, or leaks a spring.

However, DO NOT BELIEVE the general perception that rivers flow from the sea towards inland. That is completely untrue in fact there are no rivers where this happens. Rivers only flow from land to sea or a lake not the other way around but the tide can sometimes temporarily reverse the current.

A river is part of the hydrological cycle. Water within a river is generally collected from precipitation through surface runoff, groundwater recharge, springs, and the release of stored water in natural ice and snowpacks (i.e., from glaciers). (Wikipedia) The rivers themselves typically start in mountainous regions and hills and flow downward toward the ocean.

Where do rivers begin mountains oceans lakes?

they begin usually in the mountains from snow melt, but sometimes their origins are in underground springs. All rivers go to the ocean but never come from the ocean. As for lakes, how do you think the water got there? probably snow melt from a nearby mountain.
