The plate tectonics cause the differente plates to meet each other along long and deep fractures.


Sometime the pression would be so high on a precice point that the rocks would eventually break. The energy released, the shockwave, would then run through the earth and through the cityies around if it happen to be some, causing the damages we know.


Thus, earthquakes occur along the fractures, and especially along the plates running into each other (this is where the pressure is the highest).
