Poinsettia History and Lore * The Aztecs called poinsettias "Cuetlaxochitle." During the 14th - 16th century the sap was used to control fevers and the bracts (modified leaves) were used to make a reddish dye. * Montezuma, the last of the Aztec kings, would have poinsettias brought into what now is Mexico City by caravans because poinsettias could not be grown in the high altitude. * William Prescott, a historian and horticulturist, was asked to give Euphorbia pulcherrima a new name as it became more popular. At that time Mr. Prescott had just published a book called the Conquest of Mexico in which he detailed Joel Poinsetts discovery of the plant. So, Prescott named the plant the poinsettia in honor of Joel Poinsetts discovery. * The botanical name, Euphorbia pulcherrima, was assigned to the poinsettia by the German botanist, Wilenow. The plant grew through a crack in his greenhouse. Dazzled by its color, he gave it the botanical name, Euphorbia pulcherrima meaning "very beautiful." * Joel Roberts Poinsett was the first United States Ambassador to Mexico being appointed by President Andrew Jackson in the 1820's. At the time of his appointment, Mexico was involved in a civil war. Because of his interest in botany he introduced the American Elm into Mexico. During his stay in Mexico he wandered the countryside looking for new plant species. In 1828 he found a beautiful shrub with large red flowers growing next to a road. He took cuttings from the plant and brought them back to his greenhouse in South Carolina. Even though Poinsett had an outstanding career as a United States Congressman and as an ambassador he will always be remembered for introducing the poinsettia into the United States. * A nursery from Pennsylvania, John Bartram is credited as being the first person to sell poinsettias under its botanical name, Euphorbia pulcherrima. * In the early 1900's the Ecke family of Southern California grew poinsettias outdoors for use as landscape plants and as a cut flower. Eventually the family grew poinsettias in greenhouses and today are recognized as the leading producer of poinsettias in the United States.

Poinsettias are from tropical areas of Mexico, and therefore they like warmth and moisture (with good drainage). Most of the poinsettias in the world are now grown in commercial greenhouses in the San Diego area.

Many color varieties have been developed over the decades and now poinsettias are available in the original red, as well as creams, pinks, Oranges, and even a purple. Blue poinsettias are not a natural color, but were spray painted.

Keep your poinsettias thriving and ready to show off each December. Prune them back in January (leaving 2 buds), put them outdoors after the last frost (maintaining the light, heat and drainage), and bring them back inside before the first frost.

Mexico is the point of origin of the legend about the poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima).

Specifically, the legend is linked to the time of the Spanish-speaking Catholic settlers of Mexico. According to one of the variations of the legend, a brother and a sister came from a poor family and had no gifts to bring to the Nativity celebrations in their village. Along the way to the village, the girl selected an unattractive weed because she felt something was better than nothing and that God would understand that she did her best. Green parts of the plant turned red when she placed the plant on the Christmas altar.

This legend attempts to explain - in a religious context - the late bloom of the plant's dainty, inconspicuous yellow flower and the accompanying color change in the plant's modified leaves. If proper conditions of light intensity, moisture, nutrition and temperature are met in the appropriate latitude and at the appropriate altitude, then the plant blooms beautifully and spectacularly in December, just in time for the Christmas holidays. The bright red colors of the plant are associated with spiritual purity.

Central America and Mexico, the Albert Ecke family, and Joel Roberts Poinsett are the respective geographical, horticultural, and linguistic origins of the plant poinsettia. The plant in question (Euphorbia pulcherrima) originates in Latin America, where its most famous occurrences are in Mexico. It owes its introduction and perfection as a Christmas-flowering plant to the endeavors of German immigrant Albert Ecke in Los Angeles, California, from 1900 onward. Its name results as a commemoration of first U.S.A. Minister to Mexico Joel Roberts Poinsett's (March 2, 1779 - December 12, 1851) introduction of the green, red, and yellow plant to North American audiences in the years before the War between the States (1861 - 1865).
