The snow leopard can be found in the mountainous regions of 12 Central and South Asian countries : Afghanistan, Bhutan, China, India, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

Snow Leopards mainly hunt wild sheep and goats. The most important prey species are the Asiatic ibex, a wild goat, in the northern and western ranges, and the blue sheep in the Himalayas and other southern ranges. They also eat small mammals such as pikas, hares, marmots and other rodents, and birds such as chukar and snowcock.
