I have witnessed this happen. A heat stess from a candle resulted in a small star crack and moments after that, the tempered glass table top broke apart before our eyes. It's more accurate to say the glass burst or exploded. The pieces on the floor continued to pop and break apart for maybe 5 or 10 minutes, sounding like tiny popcorn. We were lucky no one was hurt.
The base of a column is exactly that...a base. Typically, columns are dived into three parts. The bottom (base), the middle (shaft), and the top (capital).
Glass can occur both naturally and synthetically. Examples of natural glass can be found in igneous rocks and asteroid impacts. Also, it is more gender neutral to say "human made" or "synthetic," rather than "man made."
Spandrel glass is made by coating a vision glass with an opaque coating. The is prevents people from looking through the glass and seeing structural features inside the building. Spandrel glass is most often used in curtain wall construction where the glass and aluminum framing on a multi-story buiding passes on the exterior side of the floor slabs. A typical high-rise building will have a top-of-slab to top of slab distance of about 12 feet, but the slab-to-ceiling height is usually 8 feet. The 4 feet above the suspended ceiling contains the "spandrel beams" (the beams that hold up the floor slabs), electrical wiring, plumbig, mechanical ducts (heating and air conditioning) and fire suppression systems. Since most of these items are rather ugly, spandrel glass is used to high them from public view. Spandrel glass is not intended for use in a "vision glass" area. If you look at spandrel glass from the interior of a building looking out toward daylight, you will see pinholes and variations in the density of the coating.
Do you mean the base board? It is better if you can remove the base board then reattach on top of the new floor. It will give you the best look. If you butt the new wood up against the base boards you may have end cuts or little mistakes around the edges of the room that you will need to cover anyway. If you can not remove the base board you will probably have to add a strip of quarter round on top of the new floor and nailed to the original base board so that you have a finished look.

There is no doubt about it; a table top made from glass adds beauty and elegance to any setting, whether it is in the dining room, living room or even the bedroom. Glass is not only affordable, but with the proper care, it can last a very long time. However, the beauty and durability of glass does not come without some special concerns that you should be aware of before rushing headfirst into a purchase. Your first consideration should be safety. For the most part, glass table tops are sturdy and they are safe; however, they are designed to rest atop a pedestal, not permanently attached to the base of the table. They are usually held in place with sticky clear rubber tacks positioned between the table base or pedestal and the glass top to prevent skidding. The reason for this is obvious. Moving a table with the glass attached to the base makes it quite heavy and extremely awkward. Moving the glass table top and base separately is much easier and safer. Because of the way the glass table top rests upon the base, the glass table top is not as steady as a conventional wooden table and may have a tendency to tip easier. If you have children or pets, it is wise to choose a medium other than glass for your table top, at least until your children are old enough to understand the safety concerns associated with having a glass table top. Another consideration when shopping for a glass table top is the type of glass you want. Two types of glass are used in making glass table tops—tempered glass and annealed glass. The difference between annealed, or regular glass, and tempered glass is this: tempered glass is cooled at a much faster rate which allows it to become stronger. Once you have found a table that you like, be sure to ask your salesperson if the top is made from tempered or annealed glass. Glass is an ideal table top as long as you know exactly what you are looking for and understand the safety concerns associated with it.
I would not recommend a glass top table, glass is fragile even in strong forms.
Another message board suggested clear silicone caulk. It's dries clear and adheres the glass to the table. I'm going to try it myself (:

You would take a piece of the glass to a glass store and custom order the glass top. It can be a bit pricey, but you need the thicker, tempered glass.
The places to purchase a glass top table are many and varied. The best place to start would be Amazon. If you are on a tight budget, a good option to try would be eBay.
