Most antique sewing machines do not display the model number anywhere on the machine. If the machine is made by Singer, you can cross the serial number to a model number and "birthdate" at singerco.com. If the machine is made by some other company, you will need to do some research. Needlebar.org has hundreds of photos of antique sewing machines and might be a good place to start looking.

There is no real way to tell, unless you have the manual. You can guess, and find out the age depending if it is a singer or not. I would also try needlebar.com as well.

There are ways to identify your machine by the look alike model of another one. Singers have a serial number which you can check against their list on their site. Other companies had other tell tail signs. Things like the decaling, lack of it, type of shuttle, table it is in etc can help as well. Look up National sewing machine company and Domestic for staters.

On most of the old black singer machines, the serial number is on the right side of the machine bed under the oval Singer badge. On the 401, 403, 404, 500, and 503 they are on the bottom of the machine at the left end of the machine bed. On machines newer than that, I'm not sure but I think Singer.com has a page that shows where to find most serial numbers.

Most singers that were in treadles don't have the model number on the machine. A few might and if they do they will be normally below the Singer badge on the column that holds the handwheel. If not, the serial number is usally below the column in the bed of the machine. Check that out at http://www.singerco.com/support/model_number.html to find out your model.

Once in a while they are wrong so when you get the model # they say it is, Google a photo of it to double check.

The model number of most sewing machines is stamped or glued somewhere on the body of the machine, usually on the bottom.
