About 95% of the population is afraid of speaking in public. Nearly 75% of population has fear of Public Speaking. Public Speaking is rated as number 1 fear in the world, informed D.Ramchandram of Media Junction, a Hyderabad/India based Public Speaking Trainer. Death is rated number two fear.

Speaking in public terrifies lot of people. It is a universal problem. Four out of ten people have fear of speaking in public. Public Speaking is more fearful than death.

The Public Speaking capability is not a gift of providence, but can be acquired through training and practice.

Though a structured curriculum is being offered in many of the western and developed countries for many years, like Dale Carnegie, Toastmasters etc, Junior Chamber International, but, in India the educational institutions have left it to the students to pick up this skills on their own.

We have just handful of orgnisaitons/institutions who train or address Public Speaking training which include Junior Chamber Internaitonal-India, Media Junction, Dale Carnegie India, Toastmasters, UNI &Y and others.

Junior Chamber International-India(JCI-India), introduced a module on Public Speaking for their members as early as in 1968. Mostly this training is confined to their members. And is not open to outsiders. The address: Junior Chamber International India, AMI Cplx, AMI Kalash, I.C.Colony Road, Borivali (W), Location:Mumbai, India, 400103, email: nhq@jciindia.in; website: www.jciindia.in

Besides JCI India, Toastmasters we don't hear of many institutions in India offering Public Speaking Training. Though there are some, but offer it as one single module as part of some other program and not as a focused module.

Off-late Media Junction, a Hyderabad/India based specialist organisation for Public Speaking Training has been conducting Workshop on Effective Public Speaking for general public across the state of Andhra pradesh and India. Media Junction is a profit centre and it orgnises Public Speaking programs, workshops all through the year. And charges a fee which ranges from Rs 4000/- to Rs 5000/- . It is said to be the most sought after orgnisation for Public Speaking Training in India. Many politicians, professionals, business men have been approaching this organisation. Be a good listener, remember names, and network, and you might find success the Dale Carnegie way. Dale Carnegie & Associates, started by the author of the 1936 bestseller "How to Win Friends and Influence People," teaches sales, teamwork, and public-speaking skills. The company, founded in 1912, runs courses and franchisees operate offices in more than 75 countries. Dale Carnegie India(www.dalecarnegieindia.com) Phone: 091-22-67818113 organises Public Speaking Mastery programmes across India in major cities from time to time all over the year.

Toastermaster International which is into helping people become more competent and comfortable in fron of an audience has many clubs in India. It is a non-profit orgnization. Toastmasters Meetings offer good opportunity for Public Speaking experience and practice. They meet either weekly once or twice. All most all major Indian cities have toastmaster clubs. For more information, please log in www.toastmasters.org. You can also located a club close to your city through this web site. But Toastmasters are mostly confined to many upper strata of the society and not many are aware of it.

Some cities in YMCA too have some speakers forums, UNI & Y clubs. Which you can look for them. Many leaders of yester years like Union Minister Jaipal Reddy, Seetharam Yechuri etc have developed their leadership skills through UNI & Y. It has branches across India.

The YMCA tradition is not new to India. Way back in the year 1857 the first YMCA in Asia was started at Calcutta, the then Capital of India. The National Council of YMCAs of India was formed in Madras on February 21, 1891 through the initiative of David McConaughy. The headquarters shifted to Calcutta in May, 1902. In 1964 it shifted to New Delhi, its present location. YMCA offers many learning oppotunities including Public Speaking. YMCA in India is located at Yuvak Bhawan, Jai Singh Road,New Delhi-110001

There is an another institution --The UNI-Y, University Students' Wing of YMCA is also very good forum for leaning, leadership skills and Public Speaking. Any University student of good character, irrespective of religion and gender, who has completed his school and is doing any course recognized by a university comes under the category of students and are eligible for UNI-Y membership. However these students can claim membership only up to the age of 25 including grace period.

As the mighty oak exists in its sapling so does a man in the child. This is a profound truth not a mere analogy. The sapling sprouts only if the seed is sown. The seed was sown in the year 1959 when the YMCA Forum for Public Affairs in Hyderabad under the inspiring leadership of its Chairman, Mr. Justice Gopalrao Ekbote, organized the First Model Assembly, during which a decision was taken to have a forum for young students as well.

The seed sprouted in the year 1963, when the Second Model Assembly was held and the first UNI-Y came into existence at Hyderabad. There were only three members including Mr. D.S. Chinnadorai, General Secretary, YMCA Hyderabad, when UNI-Y began. Ever since its formation the number of members steadily increased thanks to the enthusiasm of the leaders and members. The second UNI-Y was started in Nagpur followed by the third unit in Secunderabad and soon several others followed. The sapling, which had grown to be a plant, started blossoming by the time of the Fourth Model Assembly as the UNI-Y witnessed a phenomenal growth.
