A tsunami happens in an area where there is earthquake activity. Most tsunamis occur from undersea earthquakes. The large waves of the tsunami are generated by the abrupt movement of the ocean floor.

underwater earthquakes create tidal wave on surface
Poseidon is the god of earthquakes and the sea. Both of which are needed to cause a tsunami. It is obvious that Poseidon caused the Japan earthquake/tsunami. What was the reason? We can only guess. Perhaps he is protesting against the giant garbage float. We should repent immediately or suffer the consequences.

Tsunamis occur when water is displaced rapidly, for an example with an earthquake. Tsunamis look like small waves in the deepsea, but rapidly gain height as they enter shallow waters and strike land. They are usually formed near faults and the edges of tectonic plates.

An undersea earthquake causes large waves that get larger as they approach the shore. Warning signs includes earthquakes and the ocean receeding for no apparent reason. The average Tsunami travels at 450mph (725kph) while out at sea.

I know you can get this anywhere, but tsunamis occur when a violent eruption in the crust ( aka. an earthquake ) moves water in a huge burst of energy and moves the water. The wind can also play a role in the tsunami and how fast it travels. When the tsunamis usually occur in deep ocean, it is rare or even impossible to happen right at land and still cause a large tsunami, but when moving more towards shore, the wave length decreases and the height increases and soon becomes this big, towering wall of water.
