When your muscles don't get enough oxygen (e.g. when you are heavily exercising and your blood is pumping fast but not fast enough to bring enough oxygen to your muscles). Then it switches from aerobic to anaerobic respiration and lactic acid is created in your muscles, which is why we feel a burn and get sore when we work out.
