Maize (corn) is native to the Americas and has been cultivated for more than 3,000 years. Wheat flour was used in Europe and the Middle East at least 8,000 years ago. Ricehas been grown for over 12,000 years in Asia. It was brought to the American colonies in the early 1600s. (Wild rice, also called Indian rice, is different from what we generally call rice). Rice, maize, and wheat are all categorized as grasses.
