It comes from sunlight originally, since plants formed the original organic molecules.

When dead plants and animals were buried, compressed, and heated, their products (coal, oil, gas) retained the chemical energy stored in their molecules millions of years earlier.

This is what i think based on logic, but I'm not sure:Fossil Fuels used to be dead organic matter (plants/animals)The plants conducted photosynthesis and produced chemical energy which was stored inside them (in carbohydrates)Animals had access to chemical energy when they ate the plants --> energy flowed from plant to animal. When both plants/animals (with stored chemical energy) die, usually, decomposers turn them into nutrients etc, AND RELEASE ANY STORED ENERGY BACK TO ENVIRONMENT. However the plants/animals that form fossil fuels, can't be decomposed properly, since there isn't enough oxygen in the particular environment. Since they plant/animal is only partially decomposed, decomposers can't release energy back to environment, meaning stored chemical energy still resides in dead organisms. These organisms turn into fossil fuels over millions of years under heat+pressure, WHILE STILL CONTAINING THAT STORED CHEMICAL ENERGY.

And THAT'S WHERE CHEMICAL ENERGY IN FOSSIL FUELS COMES FROM!!! i think...

decayed organisms. after several years, the soil will push them into the rocky part of the earth near the core. of course, the core is very hot so those decayed organisms will be burned and will become oil.

Fossil fuels are nonrenewable resources that were produced millions of years ago by animals and plants. They are usually found underground.

Did the energy that is stored in fossil fuels come from fission or fusion reactions from the sun?

Not fission. The sun's energy is produced by nuclear fusion, and that energy produced all the vegetation which turned into fossil fuel.

How do fossil fuels store energy?

Fossil fuels contain the chemical energy that plants and algae obtained from sunlight and then stored in sugars. Just as energy chemical energy is stored in sugars, chemical energy is stored in fossil fuels. All it takes to release it is enough heat and oxygen to cause the fuel to burn.
