The flower is where the poinsettia bloom is located.

Specifically, the flower blooms a dainty, inconspicuous yellow. But it is surrounded by modified leaves called bracts. The true bracts that immediately surround the flower are always red in color. The transitional bracts that are found between the true bracts and the plant's regular leaves start out green in color. But they change to a bright red color by the time that the plant blooms in December.

Poinsettia admirers often mistakenly describe the color change in the transitional bracts as a "bloom."

Today, (because of its demand) seasonal plantations for poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima) exist mostly in eastern U.S. in such states as South Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania and even parts of New Jersey.

However, the plant itself is "native" to scattered parts of Central and South America; but not N. America.

The plant has different names in different countries. For example in Chile, Colombia and Peru, this plant is nick-named "la crona de los andes" which means the crown of the andes.

The name poinsettia, was given (only here in the U.S. ) after it was introduced to the U.S. by a French botanist named Joel Roberts Poinsett, who brought it back to the U.S. from Mexico in 1828.

December is the bloom time of poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima).

Specifically, the plant tends to initiate flowering after experiencing 12 hours 20 minutes of uninterrupted darkness for five (5) straight days. The dainty, inconspicuous yellow flowers will appear 65-85 days later. The range reflects the meeting of one of three daily temperature combinations with nightly temperatures of 60 degrees F:

1. 65 days if daily temperatures are 80 degrees F.;

2. 75 days if daily temperatures are 70 degrees F.;

3. 85 days if daily temperatures are 60 degrees F.

But the above is not a given if other important conditions are not met, such as:

1. Correct altitude and latitude;

2. Prevention of disease and of exposure to weed killers;

3. Proper levels of humidity, light intensity, and soil aeration/drainage/moisture/nutrition.

All fifty (50) states in the United States of America can and do grow poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima).

Specifically, poinsettias are considered the quintessential plant for the end-of-the-year holidays because of their bright colors and December bloom. There is such a concentrated, intense demand for the plant that sales tend to take place within the six (6) weeks preceding the Christmas holidays. Totals are in the millions of plants sold and in the millions of total sales. Growing and selling poinsettias therefore is such a lucrative business that not one state wants to pass up on.
