The relevant text from the King James Bible:

1 Peter 3:18-20: "For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. "

The most significant statement is, "[Christ] ... being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison", because this says that Christ went to hell, where he preached to the condemned spirits (spirits in prison). This passage began the early Christian dogma that Christ preached in hell, although the presumed purpose of this seems unclear.

A:1 Peter 3:18-19: "For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison [hell];"

It is well established that the book known as the First Epistle of Peter was really written in the second century, not by the apostle Peter. This does raise the question as to why was its unknown author the first to know about the descent to hell and how he learnt of it. Otherwise, it is possible that Jesus did not go the hell as stated in this passage.

Answer:

As all who die, the body returns to the ground (Ecclesiastes 12:7) or 'hades' in the Greek and 'sheol' in the Hebrew - both words translated into English as 'hell.' In the Gospels, Jesus, like all mankind, died and was buried in the grave - sleeping until His Father called Him to His resurrection - the firstborn of many bretheren.

Though there are 3 major interpretations of 1 Peter 3:18-19, with one of them mentioned above, the clearer one from the context of the paragraph and other Scriptures on the topic is as follows. The word hell Peter is discussing is 'tartarus' which is a special place of restraint for the fallen angels of Satan (2 Peter 2:4-6; Jude 1:6).

Answer:

1 Peter 3:19 talks of Jesus preaching to the spirits in hell after his crucifixion, although for what reason or for how long is not stated. 1 Peter 3:22 says that he is now in heaven.

never, he only went to earth and heaven

Answer:

On the day of Pentecost, Peter quoted a "prophetic" Psalm to the ones who killed Jesus on the Passover, some fifty-plus days earlier, and said:

"For David speaketh concerning Him, 'I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for He is on my right hand, that I should not be moved: therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope: because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption." (Acts 2:25-27 see also Ps.16:8-10)

This "hell" is referring to and prophesying of the body of Christ buried in the 'tomb' or the "grave" [OT: 'sheol'; NT: 'hades'].

It's the blood left in a dead body that speeds up decomposition.

Jesus' body was shed of His blood... and the three-and-a-half days His bloodless body lay in the tomb wasn't long enough to cause decompostition [corruption].

Both "sheol" and "hades" are translated "hell" in The Bible... and merely mean the "grave."

On the other hand... some men teach that Jesus wasn't dead at all for three days and three nights, but instead, was "alive" and "...went and preached unto the spirits..." in "hell" during that time.

Peter says: "...He went and preached unto the spirits in PRISON..." (I Peter 3:19) -- not "hell."

Nor did He do His preaching "while He was dead in the tomb"... but "back during the days when Noah was building the ark" [verse 20].

The "hell" that the dead Jesus descended into was "the grave,": "...(Now that He ascended, what is it but that He also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that He might fill all things.)" (Eph.4:9-10)

Did Jesus Go to Hell?

The biblical authors were more accurate in their use of words than some of our Bible translators . There are two Greek words for the abode of the dead. (Greek is the language in which the New Testament of the Bible was originally written.) Hell (Geennain Greek, also called the lake of fire and the eternal fire) was made for the Devil and his minions (Matthew 25:41) and will be occupied by all the unrighteous after the last judgement (Revelation 19:20-21 and 20:10-15). There is no biblical evidence that anyone has gone there or will go there until after Jesus' Second Coming (Revelation 19:11-16). This includes Jesus Himself.

The other Greek word is Hadas (from which we get the English word Hades). This is the region of the dead. Before Jesus' ascension, the spirits of all people went to Hades. After His ascension, only the spirits of unbelievers go to Hades, while the spirits of believers go directly to be with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:1-8). It is into this region that Jesus entered after His crucifixion (Acts 2:25-31 in which Peter quotes from Psalm 16:9-10). Ephesians 4:8-10 says that Jesus, "had descended into the lower parts of the earth." This may also speak of Jesus' visit to Hades before His ascension. Finally, Romans 10:7 refers to Jesus in "the abyss" while He was among the dead. After the final judgment, Hades will be cast into Hell (Revelation 20:14). Therefore, Jesus descended into Hades but not into Hell."

Yes, sort of; You will find that written in 1st Peter 3:19-20 where Christ. The reference there is in relation tho those who had been held on the other side of the great gulf fixed (often referred to has hell from the account of Lazarus and the Rich man - Luke 16). It would not have been fair for Christ to have not been available to all those souls who had come before him and did not have the freedom to choose for the sake of their soul our Father or the doctrines of men.

AnswerRead Luke 16 which explains the feeling of hell and those who are transferred across the great gulf fixed (prison) when they die and return to the father in the spirit (Ecclesiastes12:7), "Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return to God who gave it"

Here is the idea, Christ did not show up until 2 thousand years ago. Therefore it would have not been fair to all those who came before Christ in the flesh if they had not had the same opportunity as we have (salvation), therefore Christ went and preached to them who were in prison as it is stated in 1st Peter Chapter 3

" For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quicken by the Spirit: By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison...

Answer:

The Bible doesn't say: "Jesus descended into hell."

The closest scripture that says Jesus"descended"... but not to"hell" is:

"Wherefore he saith, When ascended up on High, He led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. (Now that He ascended, what is it but that He also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above the heavens, that He might fill all things.)" (Eph.4:8-10 KJV)

[same verses; NLT New Living Translation]: "That is why the Scriptures say, 'When He ascended to the heights, He led a crowd of captives and gave gifts to His people.' Notice that it says 'He ascended.' This means that Christ first came down to the lowly world in which we live. The same One who came down is the One who ascended higher than all the heavens, so that His Rule might fill the entire universe."

[same verses; LVB Living Bible]: "The Psalmist tells about this, for he says that when Christ returned triumphantly to heaven after His resurrection and victory over Satan, He gave generous gifts to men. Notice that it says He returned to heaven. This means that He had first come down from the heights of heaven, far down to the lowest parts of the earth. The same One who came down is the One who went back up, that He might fill all things everywhere with Himself, from the very lowest to the very highest."

One thought:

Jesus DID go to 'Hades' after his execution, as was prophesied(Psalm 49:15/Mark 8:31/Luke 18:31-33). Christ died (Romans 6:8/Revelation 1:18)with 'evil doers'(Mark 15:27/Luke 22:37 ) and was buried in a 'grave'('buriel place')(1 Corinthians 15:3+4/Matthew 27:60+61/Isaiah 53:9) for parts of three days.

The confusion arrises when different versions of the Bible, translate this term for 'grave' differently. A prophecy about the death of the coming Messiah can be found at Psalm 16:10 where:

-The King James Bible says:"For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption."

-The New International Version translates this as: "...you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithfulone see decay."

-The American Standard version: "For thou wilt not leave my soul to Sheol; Neither wilt thou suffer thy holy one to see corruption."

-The Common English version says:"because you won't abandon my life to the grave;

you won't let your faithful follower see the pit."

This reference is again mentioned at Acts 2:27, where Jesus' death was pointed to as fulfillment of these prophecies, with the same differences in translation.

Jesus did infact go to 'Hades'(Gk)('Sheol' (Hb) after his execution, because He died. He was in the grave for parts of three days, as prophesied by Jonah's experience with the big fish (Matthew 12:40/Matthew 16:21/Matthew 17:23/Luke 24:46/Matthew 27:63) completely reliant on his father for the resurrection(1 Peter 1:3/Acts 2:31+33/Acts 3:15/1 Corinthians 15:4).

Another answer:

The "hell" in question is merely "the grave"... contrary to, and in spite of, the imaginary stages of "hell" that Dante invented for his play, "The Divine Comedy" that apostate Christianity [and many other false religions] adopted into its beliefs.

Jesus' body wasn't left in the "grave" [hell]... but was raised from the grave three days and three nights later.

Jesus wasn't alive at the time, so He didn't "go there," which makes it sound like He was alive and walked there Himself... but His dead body was carried away and placed in "hell":

"Afterward Joseph of Arimathea, who had been a secret disciple of Jesus (because he feared the Jewish leaders), asked Pilate for permission to take Jesus' body down. When Pilate gave him permission, he came and took the body away. Nicodemus, the man who had come to Jesus at night, also came, bringing about seventy-five pounds of embalming ointment made from myrrh and aloes. Together they wrapped Jesus' body in a long linen cloth with the spices, as is the Jewish custom of burial. The place of crucifixion was near a garden, where there was a new tomb [sepulcher, grave, hell] , never used before. And so, because it was the day of preparation before the Passover and since the tomb [sepulcher, grave, hell] was close at hand, THEY LAID JESUS THERE." (John 19:38-42 NLT New Living Translation)

Who did Jesus teach in sheol?

If you are talking from a biblical standpoint, the Bible never says that He taught anyone in Sheol (the Hebrew word for Hell). In fact, the Bible doesn't even say that He went to Hell at all, just that He died and went to be with God. Legend has it that He spent the three days between His death and resurrection in Hell, paying for the sins of the world, but this cannot be found in the Bible.
