It originates from travelling theatre troupes which would arrive in small local communities and put on a show, usually in a barn. From that it moved into the early days of aviation. * the popular entertainment in the 1920's where stunt pilots entertained the crowds by flying over and through barns.

* Now brought to mean political whistle stop events laced with fiery rhetoric to garner support
