Well, most earthqakes happen on fault lines, which is a meeting point between two tectonic plates. Just like an eggshell, the earth is broken up into sections. When these two or maybe three plates slip past each other, it creates an earthquake. An example of a fault line is the San Andreas fault in Caifornia. There are also many fault lines in South America and Asia.
