Where in Germany were the Nazi concentration camps? In: US Civil War
[Edit categories]

There had been concentration camps in Germany since March 1933. These were intended mainly for political opponents of the Nazis. Well known examples include Dachau, Buchenwald (near Weimar), Neuengamme (near Hamburg). There was at least one 'specialized' camp, Bergen-Belsen (near Hanover) for people with infectious diseases. Unlike with the "death camps", the regime made sure that details of the horrific conditions in these camps became known among the population.
During the later stages of the war, some of the distinctions between the different types of camps became blurred, and some "ordinary camps" were also used as "death camps", though on a smaller scale.
