Christopher Columbus was trying to find a ROUTE to India and China (Hence the West Indes are called Indes but have no connnection to India.) and, especially, the Spice Islands, to avoid the expense of the overland carriage of expensive spices to Europe. He thought the world was about one third smaller than it is really.
