Some older soffit boards are constructed from asbestos cement sheets, many types of insulation, if you have an older home with cloth wiring the cloth can contain asbestos as well.

How do I identify asbestos in my recently purchased home?

Testing for Asbestos?

One of the most significant health hazards facing all homeowners is asbestos. If asbestos is in a home, it could become airborne, which could be devastating to someone's health over the long-term. While you can normally complete a basic visual asbestos test in your home, if you are worried that your home could have asbestos, it would be best to call a professional to complete either a PLM or TEM analysis. Both of these will find even the most miniscule forms of asbestos in your home.

What types of products have been known to contain asbestos?

One of the most common products you can find asbestos in is insulation that was used in the 1980's and 1990's to help keep homes warm or to take up space in an attic or basement. Typically, it is not used in the current product because of the health measures it has been found to cause but you can also find asbestos in a lot of cleaning and other products around assembly-lines in factories and in other building materials including floor tiles.

Is asbestos ever found in Portland cement?

Under normal circumstances we would not find asbestos in Portland cement. Asbestos has a number of applications (even though it is hazardous), but none of them involve it being mixed with cement. The presence of asbestos in cement would weaken the final product (concrete, grout, mortar, stucco, or whatever), so there is no reason to deliberately include it in the cement.

How do you know if you were exposed to asbestos and if it will cause mesothelioma?

Check the building years of your house and the office building you normally visit. If they are build before 1990, take some extra efforts to find if there were actions to remove possible asbestos in the builds.
