John Travolta, born in 1954, in New Jersey; is a highly acclaimed American actor with a career that began in television with the show, "Welcome Back Kotter" where he played the role of High School character, Vinnie Barbarino; a cocky, slow-witted, Italian American, who was the subject of envy and amusement with his classmates for his "ways with women".
His transition from television to the Silver Screen began with his starring role in Saturday Night Fever. The movie and his role were a huge commercial success, and helped to popularize Disco Music around the world. His next roles were starring ones in the movie Grease, with Olivia Newton John, and in Urban Cowboy, which also starred Debra Winger. After Urban Cowboy, his career fell into a slump when he starred in a number of box-office failures.
In 1994, his career was revived when he starred in Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, which also earned him his second nomination for an Oscar for Best Actor. He then starred in a number of subsequent A list movies, such as, Get Shorty, Face/Off, A Civil Action, and the General's Daughter.
In the 2000s, he has starred in film hits such as, Swordfish, Basic, Ladder 49, Lonely Hearts, and he played the female starring role in the musical remake of Hairspray, in 2007. In 2008, he was the voice for the animated dog Bolt, in the movie Bolt. In 2009, he then starred in the remake of the movie The Taking of Pelham 123, which was a box office failure, and a poor remake.
He is a certified pilot and owns five aircraft, including a Boeing 707. His home in Florida, is situated on Greystone Airport, with its own runway and taxiway right to his front door.
Travolta has been a highly visible practitioner of Scientology; the Church of Scientology has been surrounded by controversies since its inception.
He's married to actress Kelly Preston. They have a daughter, and had a son who died in 2009. In May, 2010, John and Kelly announced that Kelly is pregnant with their third child.
