Pompeii is a ruined Roman city near modern Naples in the Italian region of Campania, in the territory of the commune of Pompeii. It was destroyed, and completely buried, during a catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius on 24 August 79 AD. The volcano buried Pompeii under many meters of ash, and it was lost for 1,600 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1748. Since then, its excavation has provided an extraordinarily detailed insight into the life of a city at the height of the Roman Empire. Today, it is a main tourist attraction of Italy and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

∙ 9y agoPompeii is south of Naples. The town was incredibly well-preserved due to the explosive nature of the Vesuvius eruption. You can see homes as they lived in them, an old bar, an old brothel and their amphitheater among many other things.
Significant artifacts were moved to an enclosed museum when vandals destroyed several mummified remains - cutting off their heads - about 15 years ago or so- I think in late 1990s or early 2000s. The artifacts were on site when I visited in 1988.
There is another site one can visit, but can't recall the name off the top of my head. Equally well preserved and very few tourists since few know of it.
