Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0340 - Camshaft Position Sensor

Your cam position sensor or the wiring leading to it has gone bad. It will cause occasional rough running and hard starting until it is replaced.

Answer

Look for a thing at the front (relative to engine) of the intake manifold that looks like a great place to put a distributor. It is bigger than a quarter but smaller than a teacup, round, made of plastic. two screws attach it to the cam sensor synchro. Do not rotate the synchro unless:

1: It is necessary to do so and

2: you have the alignment too to realign the synchro.

Camshaft position sensor is where the "distributor" used to be on the same engine prior to 1995. It's at the "front" of the engine, which is on the passenger side of the car; it's a bit tricky getting to it. The best way is to (first disconnect the battery) remove the alternator (3 15mm bolts, and don't forget to unplug the regulator connector first) and move it out of the way, then look down and you'll find the round black sensor plugged into the wiring harness. It's held on with 2 small bolts (forgot the size, but I think it's 5.5mm). It's directly behind the Power Steering tubes and water pump by-pas tube. It's just a magnetic pickup and not common for it to go bad, however if that's your problem, and you're going to replace it, DON'T rotate the engine or your initial timing will be off. If you have to move it, use care and remove the hold-down bolt completely and use plenty of penetrating/lubricant spray. Mark the position of the sensor and rotate the whole unit, then after replacing it, be sure to put the unit back in the EXACT same position from where you started. Hope this helps!

On top of the cam sensor synchronizer which is sticking out of the top of the timing cover on the front of the engine.

On top of the cam sensor synchonizer which is sticking out of the top of the timing cover on the front of the engine.

Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the two 7/32 screws holding it on, and replace it.

On the 3.8L it is like a little distributor at the front of the engine in the top of the timing cover. It has been a while but I think it just has one screw and clamp holding it in. You should also have the engine on TDC #1 and mark the old one before you pull it out. This makes life a lot easier if the engine would by chance turn with the sensor removed. MGL

How do i install a 1997 dodge caravan 3.0 camshaft position sensor?

If I'm not mistaken, I think the camshaft position sensor on these engines is built into the distributor. You'd have to replace the whole thing.

The Dodge Durango was introduced in 1998, so this question cannot be answered. However, in the 2000 Durango.... The camshaft position sensor is located in the distributor on all 3.9L V-6 and 5.2/5.9L V-8 engines Camshaft Position Sensor REMOVAL Distributor removal is not necessary to remove camshaft position sensor Remove air cleaner assembly. Disconnect negative cable from battery. Remove distributor cap from distributor (two screws) Disconnect camshaft position sensor wiring harness from main engine wiring harness. Remove distributor rotor from distributor shaft. Lift the camshaft position sensor assembly from the distributor housing Camshaft Position Sensor INSTALLATION Install camshaft position sensor to distributor. Align sensor into notch on distributor housing. Connect wiring harness. Install rotor. Install distributor cap. Tighten mounting screws. Install air cleaner assembly.
