When you try to do binding on a book, you need some space on the left hand side or top side of the book to pass your binding material like needle and thread. The space you allot for such use is "Gutter Space". If you don't leave this space, a portion of your text may get cut.

It is the gap between opposing pages. This is for binding the book, ensuring that when the pages are bound, text can still be seen. So it is wider than the other margin.
