Amazingly the cheapest way to get an iPhone is to purchase it outright from an apple store. you do not pay retail on the item thus leaving you with the cheaper alternative.
also don't be fooled into thinking that mobile service provider plans are cheaper as they usually are not and can make you pay heaps more.

∙ 12y agoSince this question is in the iPhone 3GS catergory, I think you have AT&T. If so, the cheapest is the iPhone 3GS 8gb which is free with a two year AT&T contract. If you have Verizon, Sprint, or C Spire or something, the cheapest model is the iPhone 4 with 8gb for $99.
