TEMP Guage Not FunctioningI'm definitely not an expert, however my 2000 Monte Carlo SS has been having a TEMP guage problem causing the check engine light to turn on for days, then out of no where it would "fix" itself and turn off. The TEMP guage would stop functioning and the car SEEMED to be running harder, so I took the car to AutoZone and they scanned the check engine light for free. The error code was reporting one of three problems 1. Low Coolant Level, 2. Thermostat Defective or 3. ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) Sensor Defective. I had the coolant level checked, and that was fine, so I ruled that out. I had my ETC Sensor replaced, but I still kept having the problem, so that's out. Now the only thing left is the Thermostat, so hopefully after this weekend (when I get that replaced) everything will be fine. Again, I hope this information helps, as I'm just assuming your having similar issues.

But where is the coolant temp sensor at? That is the question.

The ECT sensor is located on the driver's side of the engine just below the thermostat housing. The thermostat housing is the part that the top radiator hose attaches to on the motor. You will probably need to take the plastic engine cover off to find the connectors for the sensor. It's easy to do. Just remove your oil cap and then the plastic tube that the cap was screwed onto. Grab ahold of the tube and turn it counter clockwise about a quarter of a turn and it should come right out. Now lift the plastic engine cover off the engine. You should find a pair of wires in front of the motor going around to your right hand side of the motor as you are facing the motor. You should also find the connector for the two wires at the point they connect to the wiring harness in front of the motor. These two wires also connect to the sensor with a plug that has a latch that holds the plug to the sensor. The sensor has a hex head for a wrench to remove it. One watchout is that the exhaust pipe is very close to the sensor and may be hot if your motor has not had time to cool. Hope this helps and good luck.
