The crankshaft position sensor on a 1988 Chevrolet Celebrity 2.8 liter engine (VIN W) is located in the middle of the engine block on the rear side of the engine (as mounted in the vehicle). It inserts into a hole in a surface that comes out at about 45 degrees from the engine block facing upward and to the rear. It is held in by one bolt that should be torqued to 8 Newton meters (71 pound inches). As mounted, the bolt is to the left of the sensor. On a 2.5 liter engine (VIN R), the sensor is attached to the back of a plate that the ignition coils are attached to (the ignition module). This one slides into the engine block in roughly the same place as on the 2.8L, except it slides in horizontally (into the vertical surface of the side of the engine block), not at a 45 degree angle. The module is held onto the engine block with three bolts that should be torqued to 27 Newton meters (20 foot pounds). You'll have to raise the car to access either one.
