A Jeep's manual transmission does not have a dipstick. To check the oil level, remove the fill plug. The case should be filled with oil up to the bottom edge of the fill plug. Note that these plugs often weep oil. I carefully dry the threads of the plug and the case and use a little bit of sealant on them. Make sure none of the sealant gets inside the case.

The 2001 Subaru all back transmission dipstick is located behind the engine, in the engine compartment. The transmission dipstick should have a yellow handle.
Look under the hood, and locate the transmission dipstick. Grab the top, and pull the dipstick out of the dipstick tube.
