Where is the fuel filter located and how do you replace it on a 1999 VW Passat?

I have been informed that the fuel filter in a 1999 VW Passat is located underneath the car, near the right rear wheel, mounted to the frame. It is supposedly covered by a black cover and relatively simple to replace. I am not sure what tools are needed as we are going to attempt that tonight. !
AnswerThe fuel filter is located the right rear wheel in front of the rear axle. AnswerThe fuel filter is located in the engine bay of my Passat (2000 reg). Its right beside the oil filter located under the engine cover. There are two different filter types for the Passat - mine has a number of pipes conencted to the top. The piece with all of the pipes is not the filter however but rather the cylindrical object it is screwed into.Wiki User
