Australian 1920 pennies were minted in both Melbourne and Sydney. On the reverse side underneath the word "PENNY", is a scroll.

Coins minted in Melbourne will have a small dot under the scroll, coins minted in Sydney will have a small dot above the scroll.

Some coins have no dot and could have been minted at either the Melbourne or Sydney Mints.

The "no dots" coins are classified as rare.

This means of determining the mint, only applies to 1920 pennies.

Australian Pennies had two basic designs, the "Commonwealth of Australia" type issued from 1911 to 1936 and, the "Kangaroo" type issued from 1938 to 1964.

Commonwealth of Australia Pennies

Pennies minted at Heaton have an "H" mintmark on the reverse below the bottom scroll on 1912 and 1915 coins.

Pennies minted at Calcutta have an "I" mintmark on the reverse below the bottom scroll on 1917 and 1918 coins.

Pennies from 1911 to 1915 that were minted at the Royal Mint London, have no mintmark.

Pennies from 1919 to 1920 that were minted at the Melbourne Mint, have a dot below the scroll.

Pennies from 1919 to 1920 that were minted at the Sydney Mint, have a dot above the scroll.

Pennies from 1921 to 1926 were minted at the Melbourne, Perth and Sydney Mints and have no mintmark.

Pennies from 1927 to 1936 were minted at the Melbourne Mint and have no mintmark.

Australian "Kangaroo Pennies

Pennies from 1938 to 1964 minted at the Melbourne Mint have no mintmark.

Pennies from 1940 to 1941 that were minted at the Perth Mint have a dot between the KG (K.G) above the tip of the kangaroos tail.

Pennies from 1941 to 1964 that were minted at the Perth Mint have a dot after the Y in PENNY (PENNY.).

Pennies from 1952 to 1953 that were minted at the Perth Mint have a dot after the last A in AUSTRALIA (AUSTRALIA.).

Pennies from 1942 to 1943 that were minted at the Bombay Mint have an "I" below the bust of King George VI on the obverse.

Pennies from 1951 that were minted at the Royal Mint London have a "PL" after the Y in PENNY.

And that should cover all Australian Pennies.

All Australian 1919 pennies were minted at the Melbourne Mint.

Most 1919 Australian Pennies have no mintmark.

For reasons I am unable to explain or even guess at, some 1919 Australian Pennies do have a mintmark.

On the reverse side of the 1911 to 1936 Australian Penny, there are two scrolls. One above the "ONE PENNY" inscription and one below the inscription.

On 1919 Australian Pennies specifically, there may be a dot above the top scroll or, the may be a dot below the bottom scroll. Either way, the coins were minted at the Melbourne Mint.

This meaning of mintmarks applies only to the 1919 Australian Penny.

The 1920 Australian Penny has a similar system of mintmarks, but the meaning is different.
