The motherboard is the main circuit board of your computer and is also known as the mainboard or logic board. If you ever open your computer, the biggest piece of silicon you see is the motherboard. Attached to the motherboard, you'll find the CPU, ROM, memory RAM expansion slots, PCI slots, and USB ports. It also includes controllers for devices like the hard drive, DVD drive, keyboard, and mouse. Basically, the motherboard is what makes everything in your computer work together.

Each motherboard has a collection of chips and controllers known as the chipset. When new motherboards are developed, they often use new chipsets. The good news is that these boards are typically more efficient and faster than their predecessors. The bad news is that older components often do not work with new chipsets. Of course, if you are planning on upgrading multiple components, it may be more cost-effective to just buy a new computer.

It is mounted on either the side or bottom of the case.

^It is mounted to a backplane, a metal "plate" that the motherboard screws/clips onto. In most standard cases, the backplane is located on the right side of the case when looking at the front of the case. There are almost no exceptions to this rule, except some small form factor designs where the motherboard sits on the bottom of the case. By far the most common is to mount on the right side though.

It is located inside the computer tower case or laptop case and is usually screwed/bolted to the inside of the case. The motherboard (main board) is the largest circuit board inside a computer. Its what makes a computer a computer. Everything internal will connect to this board. Power supply, hard drives, media (cd/dvd) drives, memmory (RAM) are all connected to this board. These will need to be disconnected/unhooked from the motherboard in order to remove the mother board. The motherboard also houses the processor chip (Intel or AMD or similar type chip)

The motherboard is located in the case of the computer. If the machine is one of the older, horizontal ones, the motherboard would be in the "floor" of the case. If the machine is a tower, the motherboard is usually mounted to the right side (not always) when viewing from the front, and you would access it from the left panel.

This will vary from motherboard-to-motherboard. There is really no "standard" location for it, but the CPU slot will generally be on the opposite side of the motherboard as the PCI slots.
