Where is the oil filter located in a 1995 Mercedes SL500? |
[Edit] |
the oil filter cartridge is situated on the right hand side of the engine, towards the center of the motor. It's an aluminum cylinder with a hex bolt on the bottom. It is not a bare, typical looking oil filter, and you won't find anything that resembles one. Remember, this car takes a cartridge, not a screw on filter.
The oil filter kit, which you should buy at a MB dealer, or foreign car part dealer usually comes with a large "O" ring, and a couple of copper washers. Make sure to clean the cartridge housing with solvent or carb cleaner. And, check the residue...you want to see if there are any metal shavings or anything that looks suspect.
To drain the oil, I believe you will need a 13mm hex wrench (allen wrench). Do not over tighten this bolt since its threaded into an aluminum oil pan. You do not want to strip this bolt for obvious reasons.
And remember...these engines hold about 8.5 qts of oil with filter exchange....not the typical 5qts most American cars hold. DO NOT PUT CHEAP OIL IN THIS ENGINE. If you have under 60,000 miles on it, you might want to consider a synthetic oil. Otherwise, use a brand name multi-grade. The extra cost is worth it.
