I'm changing the oil on my sister's 2007 Toyota highlander, i was under the thing for a good 20 min looking for the oil filter..i swear to god you have to have slant eyes to work on the thing. Whoever put the oil filter where it is now should have their nuts nailed to a stump and pushed over backwards..i had to Google it just to find the devil. Now that i found it, getting to it will be a challenge. Ok, look at the front of the vehicle. now look under the engine towards the passengers side you should see a black filter(if it is a Toyota filter) if it is from the factory, you will need a filter wrench to remove it, because it is very tight. I guess they forgot that it will eventually need to be replaced. about 5 quarts of oil and a good oil filter will do the job, good advice is to avoid "Group7" oil filters. they are too fine in mesh and oil does not circulate as well as it should, so the engine lacks lube and you will be looking for a new engine. The oil filter is located directly in front of the engine, right beneath the hood latch, you can't see it just reach down and you will feel it. Not a great location. On my 2005 highlander it is located .. standing in front of the car put your hand on the radiator fan (engine off of course) now turn your hand around towards the engine it is just under the silver metallic plate ... Here is how to find it on a 2003 Highlander with 3.0 Liter V6 engine. Open the engine hood and face the engine from the front of the car. Look in-between the center of the radiator and the engine. You will see the exhaust manifold for three of the cylinders coming toward you and then curving back toward the engine. Reach under the exhaust manifold where it is attached to the engine and you will feel the oil filter. If you look very carefully in the spaces between the three parallel pipe segments of the exhaust manifold, you can catch a glimpse of the oil filter.

Answer

The oil filter for a 2006 Highlander with a 4-cylinder is easy to find. Facing the vehicle, it is underneath the left side of the engine, very near the front. I can easily change my oil without jacking up the vehicle. Very well thought out design for the 2006.
