I think your confused. The fact is that there is an elevated level of myelin basic protein in the cerebrospinal fluid. This is common to people how have multiple sclerosis.
I think the real question is :WHY is there an elevated level of myelin basic protein in the cerebrospinal fluid
hope this helps:)

Myelin is composed of about 80% lipid and about 20% protein. Some of the proteins that make up myelin are myelin basic protein (MBP),myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG), and proteolipid protein (PLP). Myelin is made up primarily of a glycolipid calledgalactocerebroside. The intertwining of the hydrocarbon chains of sphingomyelin serve to strengthen the myelin sheath. There are quite a few disease (multiple sclerosis, optic neuritis, transverse myelitis..) involved in the destruction of the axon myelin sheath also known as myelin sheath.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myelin
DefinitionCSF myelin basic protein is a test to measure the level of myelin basic protein (MBP) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), the clear liquid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord.MBP is found in the material that covers your nerves.A sample of CSF is needed. The most common way to collect this sample is with a lumbar puncture, also called a spinal tap. See the article on lumbar puncture for details about this procedure.Other methods of collecting CSF are rarely used, but may be recommended in some cases. They include:Cisternal punctureVentricular punctureRemoving CSF from a tube already in place in the CSF, such as a shunt or ventricular drainAfter the sample is taken, it is sent to a laboratory for evaluation. How the test is performedSee: Lumbar puncture. How the test will feelFor detailed information, see the article on lumbar puncture. Why the test is performedThis test is done to see if myelin, the substance covering your nerves, is breaking down. Myelin breakdown is called demyelination. Multiple sclerosisis the most common cause for this, but other causes may include:Bleeding of the central nervous systemCentral nervous system traumaCertain brain diseases (encephalopathies)Infection of the central nervous systemStrokeNormal ValuesIn general there should be less than 4 ng/mL of myelin basic protein in the CSF.Note: ng/mL = nanogram per milliliterNote: Normal value ranges may vary slightly among different laboratories. Talk to your doctor about the meaning of your specific test results. What abnormal results meanMyelin basic protein levels between 4 and 8 ng/mL may be a sign of a chronicbreakdown of myelin, or recovery from an acute episode of myelin breakdown. If the myelin basic protein levels are greater than 9 ng/mL, myelin is actively breaking down. What the risks areFor information on the risks of spinal tap, see: Lumbar puncture and CSF collection.ReferencesGriggs RC, Jozefowicz RF, Aminoff MJ. The myelin sheath, an insulating layer around the axon of a neuron, is mainly made up of H20 (40%); the dry mass of myelin is made up of mostly lipids (70 - 80%), and the rest is proteins (30 - 15%). There are three types of myelin protein, one of which is myelin basic protein. The lipid that mostly makes up myelin is called galactocerebroside.
