Oswiecim, Poland

Auschwitz is in Poland, about 37 miles west of Krakow. It was in German-occupied Poland from 1939-1945. Auschwitz is the German name for the town.

The concentration camp and extermination camp were established by the Nazis outside the town of Oswiecim. The Auschwitz group of camps was a vast complex, with 3 camps on the main site and a further 45 sub-camps.

It is in the south of Poland, about 40 miles W of Krakow.

Auschwitz was a vast complex of concentration camps and an extermination camp. It was not a prisoner of war camp, but a few British and American prisoners were sent there as a punishment or by mistake. A much larger number of Soviet prisoners of war were sent there, too. The Birkenau section (Auschwitz II) was above all a camp for the extermination of Jews.

By 1943 the Auschwitz complex of camps included 35 sub-camps.

What are the 3 parts of Auschwitz called?

Auschwitz had 3 big 'main' camps. They were called Auschwitz I, Auschwitz Birkenau and Auschwitz Monowitz. Monowitz was really a sub camp which was commonly used and when expanded did become as part of the main camps. Out of the lot, Auschwitz Birkenau was the biggest and most feared of as this part was about Extermination when the Final Solution was putted in place.
