Boston to prevent British army from occupying hills around the city. Battle was actually on Breed's Hill, not Bunker Hill. The Battle of Bunker Hill -- actually fought on Breeds Hill -- took place on June 17, 1775, as part of the Siege of Boston during the American Revolution. The eventual outcome was a pyrric victory for the British who suffered their greatest losses of the Revolutionary War. The Americans had to abandon their positions after they ran out of ammunition but the British "victory" did nothing to lift the siege, which continued until St. Patrick's Day in 1776, when the British withdrew from Boston.
