Grafton West Virginia
According to the placards set by the state of West Virginia - Grafton WV was the site of the first land battle of the Civil War near the bridge over Route 50 and Bailey Brown was the first soldier killed on either side.
- With all due respect, there was no battle at Grafton, WV. According to an article at this the West Virginia History website it appears that Grafton was merely an encampment or rallying place before the battle at Philippi.
- It says that T. Bailey Brown, the first casualty of the Civil War, died on May 22, 1861, at the Fetterman Bridge crossing the Tygart River, Taylor County, West Virginia. Grafton is the county seat, sixteen miles south of where T. Bailey Brown fell.
- The same article states that Brown was later buried in the National Cemetery in Grafton and not far from where the action took place is a large stone memorial along Route 50.
