The idea of cell phones began in the 1920's with police radios, but the first one was invented in 1948 by Bell Labs. The cell phone we know today was invented by Dr. Martin Cooper of Motorola in 1974 and was only used by government until 1984 when they were first sold to the public. The first cell phones were large, heavy, and expensive to use. Many were in a bag and looked like a house phone but the entire bottom was a battery.
