AnswerThe first Roman census known to have taken place in the region of Syria was the census of Quirinius, which took place in 6 CE. If Jesus was born during the reign of Herod the Great, he must have been at least ten years old at the time of the census. The gospels indicate that the family must have been living in Nazareth at this time.

As for Luke's report that there was a census during the reign of King Herod, and that Joseph and Mary were required by that census to travel from Galilee to Bethlehem, Raymond E. Brown (An Introduction to the New Testament) says, "The best explanation is that, although Luke likes to set his Christian drama in the context of well-known events from antiquity, sometimes he does so inaccurately."

A:Two gospels tell us the home town of Jesus' parents, Mary and Joseph - Matthew's Gospel and Luke's Gospel. The two gospels both agree that later in Jesus' childhood they lived in Nazareth in Galilee, but differ as to their home town at the time of his birth.

Matthew's Gospel says that the home town of Mary and Joseph was Bethlehem in Judea. When the wise men came to Bethlehem they found Jesus in a house, not a stable as in Luke's Gospel; many conservative Christians note that this could have been up to two years after the birth of Jesus, but if their home was in Nazareth they would have hurried back as soon as possible after his birth. When warned in a dream that Herod sought to kill the baby Jesus, the young family fled from Bethlehem to Egypt for safety. Most tellingly, after the death of Herod, they began the return to their home - not in Nazareth, but in Bethlehem. It was only when once again warned in a dream that they turned aside and travelled to Nazareth instead (Matthew 2:22-3): "But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee: And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene."

Luke's Gospel says that the home town of Mary and Joseph was Nazareth in faraway Galilee. Joseph was required to travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem for a census when Quirinius was governor of Syria. A few days after the birth of Jesus, they travelled from Bethlehem, where Jesus was born in a stable, to Jerusalem to present Jesus at the Temple. They then returned peacefully to their home in Nazareth.

Where are Oedipus' parents from in 'Oedipus Rex'?

Thebes is the hometown of Oedipus' parents in "Oedipus Rex" by Sophocles (495 B.C.E. - 405 B.C.E.).Specifically, Oedipus is a native son of Thebes, the hometown of his biological parents. But he does not know that. He thinks of Thebes as a fresh start and as protection from a horrendous prophecy concerning his presumed hometown of Corinth and his presumed parents, Corinthian monarchs Polybus and Merope.
