Most of the US Civil War battles took place in the states controlled by Confederate States of America. Union policy was to end this Southern rebellion as quickly as possible. To do so meant that the Union had to carry the fight into Southern territory. This was the only way to force the Confederacy to surrender. In addition to winning the major battles in the South, the Union also set up blockades on Southern ports. Within the course of almost four years, the Union did end the war, however, the cost on both sides of the conflict caused the death of approximately 625,000 to 685,000 American deaths. The loss of property ran into the hundreds of millions of dollars.
