First Olympics in 776 BC - Olympia, Greece
The ancient Greek Olympic Games began in the year 776 BC, between August 6 and September 19.[1] When Koroibos, a cook from the city of Elis, won the stadion race, a foot race 600 feet long. According to some literary traditions, this was the only athletic event of the games for the first 13 Olympic festivals or until 724 BC. From 776 BC, the Games were held in Olympia, Greece every four years for almost 12 centuries.
First Modern Olympics in 1859 - Athens, Greece
Evangelos Zappas sponsored the first modern international Olympic Games in 1859. He paid for the refurbishment of the Panathinaiko Stadium for Games held there in 1870 and 1875.[2]
There are currently international versions of the Olympics - summer and winter, each alternating every two years.
