well in most cases men were damaged after experiencing the horrors on the western front (i.e Passchendale & the Somme). Thousands of men had lost freinds in battalions and so was even more personal to watch a fellow soldier die. On the western front in particular, as many bloody battles took place on the border of France. Many men committed suicide after experiencing these horrors. It was said some men shot themselves in the foot with their fingers crossed they wouldn't be killed by their own bullet and could be saved and sent home.
Trenches were all along the front lines stretched across huge portions of Europe during World War 1.
The most famous trench lines started along the North Sea coast near Nieuwpoort, Belgium, ran south past Somme and Champagne through France, than east to Verdun. It then ran in a rough curve south again through France.
The main trench system ends at it's southern most point halfway down the eastern French border in Alsace, at the Swiss border.
Plans to continue the trench system into southern France were never completed.
Well think about it, the trees were mutilated, the land was basicly a bog from the mud, the living conditions in the western front was terrible. It did't help there were bullets shooting over your head all day and all night. And the rats, you had to make sure you hid your rations, or the huge rats would get at them, and it didn't help that the Germans started using mustard gas either.
Yes the trench warfare caused a stalemate on the western front. Soldiers would fight for maybe 30 yards but at the same time lose thousands of men.
