Cents have been made for well over 200 years so there are many collectibles to choose from.

In general most cents up to the late 1930s are worth more as collectibles. The values depend a lot on their dates, conditions, and mint marks so it's not possible to give a full listing. Plus, there are many sites such as http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/fmv.shtml that provide price lists that are kept up to date regularly.

As a short summary:

Among Lincoln cents, some (but not all) dates to look for are

1909-S

1909-S with the designer's initials VDB

1914-D

1922 with a filled mint mark

1955 double die

Among Indian cents:

1908-S

1909-S

1877

1864 with the designer's initial L

Quite a lot. The "biggies" are:

1908-S and 1909-S Indian head

1909-S VDB Lincoln

1914-D

1922 with a missing mint mark

1955 double-die

but there are many more that are less spectacular yet still of interest to collectors.

Take a look at the prices and pictures under Related Links

These coins are very common. Millions of them were made. They are worth only 1 cent unless they are uncirculated or proof and in original mint packaging. If they are proof they will have the mint mark "S" under the date.

Most nickels before 1946 are of interest to collectors, but their values vary widely depending on date, mint mark, and condition. You're unlikely to find any of these in change today but you could buy or trade for:

  • "War nickels" dated 1942-45 with a large mint mark above Monticello
  • Buffalo nickels, so long as their date is visible
  • Any Liberty head or shield nickels (1866-1912)

Over 9,400,000,000 were minted for circulation no none of them are collectible.

If you have a 1991-S proof cent in its original holder it could be worth a quarter or so.

If you are a true collector, all pennies are collectable. If you are an investor, low mintage coins and certain error coins are collectable.

1990 is considered a common date with no significant collector value. 1990-D is the same. 1990-S is a proof coin, issued only in proof sets, and has a current value of about $2.00

Yes. US war nickels (with a large mint mark above Monticello) are 35% silver and are worth at least $1 each, more in better condition. Canadian war nickels are made of base metals but are prized for their special "victory" designs and unusual coloring due to the change in metal content.

What is the value of nickels minted prior to 1964?

That's an extremely broad question because nickels have been minted since 1866 at 3 different mints. Please see the Related Links for value guides. Also remember that except for the famous "war nickels" of 1942-45, US nickels have never been made out of silver so they're the only nickels that have any extra melt value. All other nickels are made of a copper-nickel alloy so any extra value they might have would be purely as collectible items.

Are the nickels in 1930 made of silver?

No, the only US nickels to have silver are the "War Nickels" from 1942 to 1945

Do us nickels have silver in them?

No, they don't. US nickels are made of copper and nickel. The only ones that DO contain silver are war nickels, minted 1942-1945.
