Top 3:
1. Soviet Union - Most figting on the ground / destroyed 75-80% of German army. Second after United States producer of war materials.
2. United States - Second after Soviet Union fighting power (joined full scale only on D day in 1944 - rather late). Main producer of war materials, helped all allies.
3. United Kindom - first country to fight Germans back and contributed more than any other, as it thought longer than the USA the UK also lost more men and women than the USA despite Americas man power!
ANSWER
When so many nations lost so many people, to name one as most responsible for winning may not have an answer. However one might answer as follows:
In the European theatre, The USSR , including, the Red Army the Red Army General Staff the (the ones Stalin had not yet killed) did a large part of the work in crushing Germany. This fact does not take away the sacrifices of all the other people and nations who defeated the Axis. But Soviet deaths may have been half the total of all the nations. That being said, the victory was an Allied victory. And it was a victory for the world.
In the Pacific theatre, The United States of America. including territories and possessions Again this does not diminish the sacrifice of millions of others. The victory in the Pacific was also a victory of Allies including China, Vietnam, the Philippines and others.
It has also been said that wars are not "won" but that one side usually prevails.
United States and Soviet Union were the decisive advantage. But without every ally doing their part this war could have been lost.Britain providing a launch into Europe.US supplying Russia,Britain, etc so they can continue fighting off the nazi's.And US fighting Japan in the Pacific.Australia protecting their ports and giving US a place to launch in the Pacific.China holding off the Japanese so they couldn't expand further inland. Every decision played a part in allies success.
ANSWER
I Disagree, the Most decisive reason for victory in the second world war would be Soviet Russia And the United Kingdom, the Russian army baring 75% of the German army earns number one, but number two is Britain their tide turning victory in the Second battle of el alamein in North africa and the rest of continental Africa, repelling the German and Italian armies in the middle east, the British navy keeping trade and transport open in the Atlantic open, transporting the allies to Normandy and with its empire providing most troops in the D-Day landing, their bravery in the battle of Britain stopping the German army from conquering the hole of Europe, and probably stopping the US from being conquered when it came to pearl harbor, the British navy proved also decisive in the Mediterranean with the defense of the seas and the siege of Malta, and in the far East Turning the tide in southeast Asia at Burma retaking Burma and killing over 400.000 Japanese Soldiers, being the decisive army in the western theater, don't get me wrong the Americans we couldn't of won without with but when it comes to the main reasons for victory in the second world war its Russia first Britain second.
I think it disgusting when any attempt to take credit away from the Russians for crushing the monster war machine of Nazi Germany is attempted which it often is in the west. Americans try to take credit for any and everything worthy of significance to feed its sick ego. American exceptionalism is built upon falsifying history and it is the seed of fascism. America today is the most frightening country in the world.
With the exception of a Jewish Resistance, the Jews did not play a fighting role in WWII. There were obviously Jews fighting for each country, but not as a nation such as Israel. Even if they did, they wouldn't have been allied with the Japanese because the Japanese were allied with the Germans who were responsible for the Holocaust.
General MacArthur and other generals under him.
After WWII, Germany was defeated, bankrupt, and mostly a pile of rubble from Allied bombing raids.
